Why we feature this artist
Soul singing with a storyteller’s attention
Maverick Sabre’s voice carries a weathered soulfulness that can make the first phrase feel like the middle of a longer conversation. Born in London and raised in Ireland, the singer and songwriter brings acoustic storytelling, hip-hop experience and a strong interest in rhythm into the same catalogue. The records give that combination several different settings without smoothing away its rougher emotional edges.
The first singles make the grain audible
Let Me Go and I Need in 2011 introduced the voice to a wider audience before Lonely Are the Brave arrived in 2012. The songs leave the singer close enough for the pressure and texture within a line to matter. The production has a recognisable pop frame, but the delivery can remain unsettled and searching.
Innerstanding in 2015 extends the album story, allowing the writing to work through another set of instrumental and emotional colours. The relationship with hip-hop is part of the approach to phrasing as well as a list of collaborations: the voice is attentive to how a short line sits against the rhythm.
The collaborations become exchanges of perspective
When I Wake Up in 2019 includes Slow Down with Jorja Smith and Her Grace with Chronixx. Those recordings give the central voice different partners, making the exchange itself part of each song’s atmosphere. The album also has room for longer, more patient material, allowing its sequence to develop beyond the scale of a single hook. The wider catalogue subsequently includes a new recording of the debut under the title Lonely Are the Brave (Mav’s Version) in 2022. That return gives the original songs another place within an ongoing musical life. The important connection is the singer’s insistence on an audible human perspective: the arrangement can be carefully built, while the phrasing still suggests someone choosing how much of a thought to reveal.
