Why we feature this artist
Mr. Oizo: a bass line with an awkward sense of humour
Flat Beat needs very little material to establish its character. The bass has a strange, rubbery shape, the percussion leaves plenty of space around it, and repetition makes the central idea more distinctive rather than more comfortable. Mr. Oizo’s music often finds its personality in precisely that kind of slightly awkward detail.
Flat Beat and Flat Eric
Mr. Oizo is the recording name of French musician and filmmaker Quentin Dupieux. Flat Beat became an international breakthrough in 1999, with the yellow puppet Flat Eric giving the record a memorable visual companion through the Levi’s campaign.
The connection between image and sound is unusually strong, but the track works without the advertisement. Its bass line behaves like a character: immediately recognisable, a little ungainly, and expressive through changes that can be very small.
Analog Worms Attack
The F Communications album Analog Worms Attack places that musical language in a broader setting. The productions can feel deliberately rough at the edges, with rhythmic interruptions and electronic sounds that refuse the smoothness a listener might expect from a dance record.
That roughness has a purpose. A clipped phrase, a sudden space or a sound pushed too far forward can become the thing that gives a track its identity. The arrangement keeps drawing attention to the decisions inside the production.
The Ed Banger chapter
Lambs Anger followed on Ed Banger in 2008, while All Wet arrived in 2016. The later catalogue expands the range of voices and collaborators without losing the interest in unusual electronic shapes and abrupt changes of perspective.
Flat Beat remains the shortest introduction to the idea. The albums then make it clear that the famous bass line was part of a wider musical sensibility: precise in its construction, unpredictable in its behaviour, and comfortable letting a sound be funny without making the record disposable.
