The story of Nathalie Makoma
Why we feature this artist
Nathalie Makoma: a strong voice given more than one setting
Nathalie Makoma’s records make room for both the strength of a vocal performance and the lighter movement of a pop arrangement. I Won’t Forget brings the two together clearly: the rhythm moves quickly, the central phrase is easy to recognise, and the singer gives the repeated idea a changing emphasis.
An album before the television breakthrough
The solo album On Faith appeared in 2003 through edel, several years before Makoma became a finalist in the 2008 Dutch series of Idols. That earlier record gives her solo recording history more depth than the television introduction alone suggests.
The distinction is useful when approaching the voice. A singer who becomes widely familiar through a competition may already have a developed musical vocabulary, and the earlier album offers another setting in which to hear it.
I Won’t Forget
I Won’t Forget was released by Sony in December 2008, with its Dutch chart activity continuing into early 2009. The dates describe two parts of the same release story, rather than separate recordings.
The arrangement has a compact, rhythmic character. Makoma can give a short line considerable force, but the production also leaves room for the phrasing to move. The vocal works with the beat rather than simply trying to rise above it.
From one song to the next
I Just Wanna Dance followed in 2010, giving the catalogue another direct pop-dance entry. Heard beside On Faith and I Won’t Forget, it shows how the same voice can retain its identity across different studio surroundings.
I Won’t Forget is the natural starting point here. The earlier album supplies a broader vocal context, while the later single gives another view of the performer’s rhythmic confidence. Together they make a more complete introduction than one television result or one chart moment.
