Why we feature this artist
The small acoustic duo behind the large public moment
Nizlopi’s JCB became a widely shared song about a child and his father, but Luke Concannon and John Parker had developed their musical partnership long before that public moment. Acoustic guitar, double bass and human percussion give the duo a surprisingly full rhythmic life. The intimate scale of the performance remains part of the appeal even when the refrain reaches a much larger audience.
The partnership grows through playing together
The two musicians met while young and developed a sound that draws on folk-session experience alongside soul, jazz and hip-hop interests. Parker’s bass and beatboxing allow more than one rhythmic part to happen at once, while Concannon’s guitar and singing keep the song clearly in view. The arrangement feels shared because each player can respond directly to the other.
Half These Songs Are About You appeared in 2004, including JCB. The song’s later single success in 2005 gave it another public life. Its small narrative scene and child’s perspective are specific enough to remain vivid while allowing many listeners to recognise something of their own family experience.
The record belongs to a wider independent catalogue
The group’s official account places the early work within a small independent operation built around FDM Records. That setting is relevant to the scale of the music: songs developed through live playing and a close relationship with listeners before a mainstream audience arrived. Make It Happen in 2008 extends the album story, including material such as Drop Your Guard. The catalogue therefore contains a fuller musical range than the familiar construction-vehicle image might suggest. The duo’s strongest performances make a short instrumental conversation feel complete, with bass movement, guitar rhythm and vocal phrasing answering one another in real time. The large success of JCB did not create that skill; it briefly put an already distinctive way of making music in front of a different crowd.
