The story of P!nk Feat. Lily Allen

Why we feature this artist

A love song with the irritation left in

True Love lets P!nk and Lily Allen describe affection without removing the annoyance that can live beside it. The lightness of the music makes that contradiction easier to hear. A bright chorus and a pointed turn of phrase can occupy the same space, giving the song a more complicated emotional character than its title first suggests.

The Truth About Love setting

The recording appeared on P!nk’s 2012 album The Truth About Love before becoming a single in 2013. P!nk and Allen share the writing credit with Greg Kurstin, who also produced and played much of the instrumental arrangement. Allen was credited as Lily Rose Cooper on the original album edition, connecting the alternate name to the same featured performance.

P!nk carries the song’s larger vocal gestures, while Allen’s lighter, more conversational presence sharpens the contrast. Their personalities do not need to be blended into an anonymous duet sound. The pleasure lies partly in hearing two different ways of delivering a barbed observation inside the same melodic framework.

The cheerful surface and the argument beneath it

Kurstin’s keyboards, guitar, bass and programming give the record a clean rhythmic outline. The arrangement moves briskly enough to keep the complaints from settling into a heavy ballad. Instead, frustration becomes part of the song’s humour, with the recurring chorus allowing affection to return after every irritation.

Within the album, True Love offers a smaller and more mischievous relationship scene than the Nate Ruess duet Just Give Me a Reason. It works because neither singer has to pretend the feelings are perfectly consistent. The pop hook gathers those contradictions together and leaves them audible, making the record’s warmth more convincing for the rough edges it keeps.
