Why we feature this artist
A fast song can contain a difficult conversation
Paramore’s early records turn tension into motion. The guitar figures and drums keep pressing forward while Hayley Williams’s singing gives frustration, affection and uncertainty a precise melodic shape.
The first breakthrough does not settle the band
All We Know Is Falling arrived in 2005, followed by Riot! in 2007. Pressure and Emergency introduce the debut’s direct emotional language; Misery Business and That’s What You Get give the next record a more concentrated pop impact. The hooks are immediate, but their force depends on the interaction of the instruments rather than the voice alone.
Brand New Eyes in 2009 made the band’s internal strains part of the writing. Produced with Rob Cavallo, the record includes Ignorance and Brick by Boring Brick, whose speed and sharply defined phrases turn confrontation into carefully organised songs. The Only Exception opens a different space, allowing restraint and a more exposed vocal delivery to carry the emotional argument.
The name becomes a starting point again
The self-titled Paramore album in 2013 was produced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen. The band presented its making as a rediscovery of both the music and their relationship with one another, giving the title a practical meaning beyond a routine self-titled release. The wider arrangements make room for rhythmic and pop ideas that need not resemble the earlier breakthrough exactly. That willingness to reconsider the musical setting remains important in the later catalogue. Paramore’s continuity is easier to hear through the construction of a song than through one fixed style: the drums can change the pressure beneath a phrase, the guitar can answer rather than simply reinforce the vocal, and a refrain can release the tension that the verse has kept building. Even at their most immediate, the records leave room for disagreement within the sound.
