Why we feature this artist

A short vocal phrase at the centre of a long rise

Nothing But You makes a remarkably small amount of vocal material carry an expansive trance arrangement. Paul van Dyk and Hemstock & Jennings place the repeated sung phrase inside a track whose motion comes from the relationship between the driving rhythm and the melodic release. It is a collaboration best understood through that gradual change of scale.

The Reflections period

The single appeared on VANDIT in 2003 and became part of van Dyk’s Reflections album. Hemstock & Jennings are explicitly part of the artist credit, preserving the partnership behind the recording rather than reducing it to an uncredited vocal element. The track also reached the British top twenty through its Positiva release.

The vocal is not used like the continuous narrative of a conventional pop song. It returns as a melodic and emotional reference point, allowing the production to move away from it and then make its reappearance matter. The instrumental rhythm supplies forward pressure while the broader harmonies seem to open a different amount of space above it.

Different routes through the same material

The original VANDIT package included club, radio and Berlin versions alongside other remixes. The club mix runs for more than eight minutes, giving the transitions a scale that the concise radio version cannot use. Neither format needs a different central idea; the difference lies in how long that idea is allowed to gather force.

A Faithless remix followed in the same year. The sequence shows how firmly the track’s identity resides in the meeting of a recognisable vocal phrase and a carefully controlled arrangement. Reflections gives it an album context, but the long club versions make the practical craft particularly clear: repetition becomes expressive through placement, restraint and the moment the full rhythm returns.
