Why we feature this artist
Platnum: a Manchester vocal sound inside the bassline rush
Platnum’s Love Shy (Thinking About You) gives a familiar song another rhythmic life. The singing remains easy to follow, while the bassline production brings a more restless movement beneath it. It is a clear introduction to a vocal act that developed through Manchester’s club-connected music scene before reaching a much larger pop audience.
Before the chart breakthrough
The group formed around a local talent competition, Urban Superstars, in the middle of the 2000s. Over the Heartache became an early calling card, with Jamie Duggan’s remix helping it travel through the bassline scene and a Nocturnal vinyl release following in 2006.
That route matters. Platnum’s later pop success grew out of records already being used by DJs, where the relationship between a vocal phrase and a changing bass figure had to work immediately.
Two different introductions in 2008
The H “Two” O collaboration What’s It Gonna Be reached number two in the UK in 2008. Platnum supplied the vocal identity inside a production credited to another act, making the shared roles part of the recording’s character.
Love Shy followed under the Platnum name later that year. The song’s familiar melody provides a point of recognition, while the new rhythmic setting gives the vocal a different kind of energy. The change is in how the parts move together, rather than simply how quickly the record plays.
The performer beyond one single
Michelle McKenna’s later solo work continues another part of the story, but the original Platnum recordings preserve the collective vocal sound of that period. Their appeal lies in the contrast between a clear sung hook and a backing that is continually moving around it.
Over the Heartache, What’s It Gonna Be and Love Shy offer three distinct points of entry: a scene record, a shared-credit breakthrough and a single with the group’s own name at the front.
