Why we feature this artist
The heartbeat hook in Ray Foxx’s vocal-house crossover
Boom Boom (Heartbeat) gives Rachel K Collier’s singing a bright, tightly organised house setting. Ray Foxx’s production makes the central rhythmic idea easy to grasp, then uses the vocal to give that pulse an emotional character. The collaboration followed his breakthrough with The Trumpeter, but it introduced a different kind of melodic focus.
From The Trumpeter to the 2013 single
Foxx first reached a wide dance audience in 2011 with The Trumpeter and its vocal development La Musica. Boom Boom (Heartbeat) arrived in 2013 through Strictly Rhythm and Island, with Collier explicitly featured. The new record put the singer’s phrasing at the centre rather than relying on a distinctive instrumental sound alone.
Collier’s delivery can be clear and light without sounding detached from the beat. Her melodic phrases give the arrangement a recognisable point of return, while the bass and percussion maintain a steady physical movement. The repeated hook makes the song immediately accessible, but the surrounding vocal detail prevents it from feeling like an anonymous club refrain.
Several versions of one vocal idea
The original Strictly Rhythm release package gathered eleven tracks, including alternate mixes around the same collaboration. That format reflects how the recording moved between shorter listening contexts and longer club arrangements. A remix can change the pace of the build or the weight of the rhythm while retaining Collier’s vocal identity.
The single reached the British top twenty, adding a more overtly song-led record to Foxx’s early catalogue. Its place beside The Trumpeter is revealing: a strong instrumental hook had introduced the producer, while a particular singer and melodic line gave the next crossover another personality.
