The story of Reamonn
Why we feature this artist
A band’s patient build around Rea Garvey’s voice
Supergirl introduces Reamonn through a vocal that can sound both reassuring and slightly frayed. Rea Garvey’s singing gives the song its narrator, while the band controls how gradually the emotional scale expands around him.
The first records give the group a common language
Reamonn formed in Germany around Irish singer and guitarist Garvey, with Uwe Bossert, Sebastian Padotzke, Philipp Rauenbusch and Mike Gommeringer supplying the original band’s instrumental framework. Tuesday in 2000 brought Supergirl to a wide audience, followed by Dream No. 7 in 2001. The songs rely on a clear relationship between melodic directness and a steadily moving rock arrangement.
Beautiful Sky in 2003, including Star and Alright, gave that approach a broader setting. The group’s own account of the period stresses the shared work of playing together. It is useful context for music in which a keyboard part or a guitar response can prepare the vocal’s next entrance without becoming an obvious foreground event.
Wish takes the recording process to Los Angeles
The 2006 album was made with producer Greg Fidelman, bringing another studio environment into the band’s history. Tonight offers a particularly immediate introduction, letting a measured opening develop towards a large refrain. The change of location and production perspective does not erase the group’s established way of holding a song together. Later albums and live recordings extend the sequence before Garvey’s solo work becomes a separate chapter. Reamonn’s records are strongest where the performance leaves enough patience in the build for a small change to matter. A rhythm section can hold back, an instrumental line can supply a little more light and the voice can make a familiar phrase sound newly urgent. The emotional release depends on that accumulated work, giving the songs more substance than the broad description of a rock ballad allows.
