Rigby: a song built to travel beyond the room
One Song gave Rigby an unusually public setting: Dutch broadcaster 3FM selected it for Serious Request in 2009. The title’s simplicity suits a band whose recordings favour direct melodic communication. Parade offers another way into that sound, with a more immediate band identity than a television or radio introduction alone can provide.
Christon Kloosterboer’s band
Rigby formed around singer, guitarist and songwriter Christon Kloosterboer in 2008. The name referred to the Beatles’ Eleanor Rigby. Early support through 3FM Serious Talent helped introduce the band, and the first album Everything Must Go established a fuller programme around the singles.
The broadcaster’s own appearances show a band able to reshape its songs for different settings. In a 2012 session, Rigby performed One Life to the Next using iPads, an unusual accompaniment that still left the song itself recognisable.
From Serious Request to the later records
One Song became the official music for 3FM’s 2009 Serious Request campaign, giving it a role beyond a standard single release. Solid Ground followed as the next album in 2011, while Earth Meets Water brought further attention in 2013.
A 2014 Paradiso programme presented Rigby as Kloosterboer with bassist Lars van Starrenburg and drummer Bart Meeldijk. It also described Island on Mainland as a return to the underlying songs, bringing earlier material into the band’s developing sound.
That emphasis offers a useful route through the catalogue. Start with One Song or Parade, then listen for what remains when an arrangement changes: the melodic line, the shape of a refrain and a singer able to give the words a clear direction.
