Why we feature this artist

Two lead voices pushing against the same refusal

Not Giving In gives Rudimental two forceful singers with different kinds of grain. John Newman and Alex Clare can both sound strained and insistent, but they do not occupy the melody in the same way. The recording makes their shared determination feel like an exchange, with live instrumental detail and fast electronic rhythm widening the scene around them.

The second early breakthrough

The single appeared in 2012, after Feel the Love and before Rudimental’s debut album Home. Newman’s return connected it to the earlier hit, while Clare brought another vocal identity into the group’s developing sound. Both are explicitly credited as lead singers in the original recording information.

The production is also unusually full of individual performances. Mark Crown plays trumpet, Rob Sell contributes saxophone, and Renell Shaw appears on guitar alongside the group’s own instrumental parts. Those credits explain why the track can feel like a band pressing forward together even when the underlying rhythm is electronically organised.

The narrative outside the lyric

The official video follows two boys whose lives take different directions, using dance and the surrounding environment to give the song’s refusal a particular visual story. The film does not merely illustrate a performance; it adds another sequence of decisions and consequences to the music.

On Home, Not Giving In sits among collaborations that give each singer a distinct role rather than treating guest voices as interchangeable. Newman and Clare make this one especially physical. Their shared refrain sounds stronger because the listener has heard the difference between them, and the brass and drums give that joined effort a larger, communal shape.
