The story of Sam Smith
Why we feature this artist
The ballad singer who kept returning to the dancefloor
Sam Smith's early guest appearances and first album introduced two sides of the same voice. It could rise through a busy electronic track, or hold attention in a much more exposed ballad. The records that followed kept changing the relationship between intimacy, theatricality and dance music rather than settling permanently into the first successful setting.
The first major recordings
Disclosure's Latch in 2012 put Smith's vocal inside a tightly organised dance production, while Naughty Boy's La La La brought another prominent collaboration in 2013. In the Lonely Hour followed in 2014, with Stay with Me, I'm Not the Only One and Money on My Mind establishing the solo catalogue. The arrangements ranged from gospel-coloured restraint to a more rhythmically active pop sound.
Smith's high register could provide the obvious emotional peak, but the quieter phrasing was just as important. I'm Not the Only One depends on the measured delivery of its accusation; Stay with Me gains force from how little the central appeal needs to explain. The songs gave loneliness a public scale without making the performance feel entirely detached from one person's experience.
From The Thrill of It All to Gloria
The Thrill of It All arrived in 2017, including Too Good at Goodbyes, and continued to develop the ballad-led side of the work. Later collaborations such as Dancing with a Stranger with Normani reopened the connection to dance rhythm. Love Goes in 2020 brought those impulses into a wider pop framework, rather than treating the club as an occasional guest setting.
Gloria followed in 2023, with the Kim Petras collaboration Unholy giving the project a particularly stark, theatrical single. The distance from Stay with Me is substantial, yet the attraction to a highly defined vocal character remains. Across the catalogue, Smith uses changes in arrangement to ask different things of the voice: confession, invitation, release or a performance deliberately large enough to claim the whole room.
