Mendes returns to a song with a long memory

Sérgio Mendes's 2006 Mas Que Nada with the Black Eyed Peas makes an earlier part of his repertoire newly active. The Jorge Ben composition had already been central to his Brasil '66 identity, and Timeless gave it another musical setting.

Two Mendes recording periods

The official 1966 recording credits Mendes and Brasil '66, with Herb Alpert producing. Forty years later, the Timeless version places will.i.am in production, arrangement, programming and vocals, alongside Mendes and the featured Black Eyed Peas. These are distinct performances connected by the same durable song.

The older melody has room to answer

The appeal is in how readily the familiar phrase can take part in another rhythmic conversation. Mendes's musical identity remains clear, while the new vocal passages introduce different accents around it. The production does not have to freeze the song as a historical object to preserve its recognisable shape. Mas Que Nada gains another life because the musicians treat that shape as something they can still work with, allowing the refrain to welcome a different cast without losing the movement that made it distinctive.
