Shabazz the Disciple: opening the Lidushopahorraz archive
Lidushopahorraz is a particularly useful doorway into Shabazz the Disciple’s music because the artist has supplied his own account of the recordings around it. The title belongs to a body of work made during the 1990s, some of which circulated in fragments while a larger intended album remained unreleased.
The album that did not arrive
Shabazz’s release notes describe singles issued in anticipation of a planned 1998 debut through GZA Entertainment. The label’s closure left the larger programme without its intended release. Recordings made with producers including Su-Preme and Carlos Bess remained divided between issued material and the archive.
The later Lidushopahorraz programme presents this music in a more complete setting. The artist describes its first Pro-Baz volume as a collaboration with longtime associate Carlos “C12” Bess, a producer and engineer associated with the Wu-Tang recording world.
Hearing the work together
The track programme includes Organized Rimes, I’m Breathing for You, Mafia Kiss and Crime Saga, alongside the title piece. The grouping matters: a song first encountered on its own can acquire another emphasis when heard among the recordings made around it.
The voice remains the centre of attention, with a forceful delivery suited to tightly drawn scenes and an ominous musical setting. The production supplies atmosphere without removing the sense of a rapper addressing the listener directly.
For a first encounter, begin with the title recording and then continue into the artist’s own album presentation. The release notes provide something valuable alongside the music: an explanation of why this material existed in pieces and how the later programme brings it back together.
