Why we feature this artist
The singer who understood the record from behind the decks
Sonique's most familiar records join a powerful, slightly grainy voice to production made for a long night of dancing. Her experience as a DJ was part of that identity, alongside the singing. It Feels So Good could deliver a large emotional release while remaining remarkably clear about how much room a club rhythm needed.
The route to Hear My Cry
Born Sonia Clarke in London, Sonique worked with S'Express before developing a solo recording and DJ career. The experience placed her inside electronic music as a working participant rather than as a guest singer added after the arrangement was complete. Her own records could draw on that understanding of the relationship between a vocal phrase, a build and the return of the beat.
It Feels So Good first appeared before its major international breakthrough in 2000. The song uses a strong, repeating vocal idea without letting the performance become static; Sonique can change the pressure and colour of a line as the track moves around it. Hear My Cry provided the album setting, including further material that showed the range behind the familiar single.
The other sides of the first album
Sky offered another clear point of entry, while I Put a Spell on You gave Sonique an opportunity to interpret a song with an already substantial history. The contrast is revealing: the voice could carry a contemporary pop-dance chorus or make an older, more dramatic piece of material feel at home inside an electronic setting.
Born to Be Free and On Kosmo followed as later album chapters. Across that sequence, the singing retained a physical sense of rhythm even when the production changed. Sonique's best work is especially persuasive where the lead vocal seems to participate in the architecture of the track, helping determine when it tightens, opens or releases, rather than merely supplying a melody over a finished instrumental.
