The story of Sono

Why we feature this artist

The band behind a voice DJs kept returning to

Keep Control has travelled through enough remixes to make Sono seem like the name attached to one particularly durable house vocal. The Hamburg trio's albums provide a broader picture. Lennart Salomon, Florian Sikorski and Martin Weiland made electronic songs with a band identity, allowing club-oriented production and a recognisable lead voice to develop together.

The early catalogue

The group emerged around the turn of the millennium, with Keep Control establishing an immediate point of recognition. Its central phrase is direct enough to remain audible through different rhythmic treatments, while the vocal carries a sense of restraint that gives a producer room to change the pressure around it. That combination helped the track live beyond its original release setting.

Solid State in 2002 and Off in 2005 introduced a larger collection of songs. The records connect electronic rhythm to a more sustained interest in melody, performance and the relationship between individual tracks. They are useful to hear as albums, rather than as a collection of potential remix sources around one famous single: the sequence allows the trio's musical personality to develop over a longer span.

The longer band project

Panoramic View followed in 2007, with Plus in 2009 and further records including Backyard Opera and Human. The sequence makes the persistence of the project clear: a trio continuing to write and record while its first major song repeatedly found new listeners through club circulation. Later reinterpretations of Keep Control, including ARTBAT's, gave that original connection another public life.

The contrast between a song and its remix is especially revealing here. The voice can remain cool and measured while the new production makes everything around it more urgent or expansive. Sono's catalogue lets those two kinds of authorship coexist: the band makes the emotional and melodic outline, and another producer can find a different physical meaning inside the same lines.
