The story of Soul Central Feat. Kathy Brown
Why we feature this artist
Strings of Life with a new human declaration
Strings of Life (Stronger on My Own) gives Kathy Brown a vocal statement inside a musical idea already central to dance history. Soul Central’s version brings the familiar piano energy into a new house setting, and Brown’s singing changes how that energy is understood. The instrumental excitement becomes the frame for a song about finding strength after a relationship.
The Defected recording
The collaboration reached its broad single audience in 2005 through Defected. It draws on the Strings of Life associated with Derrick May’s earlier Transmat recording, making the piano figure a point of continuity between different dance-music periods. Brown supplies a newly identifiable emotional centre around that inherited musical movement.
Her voice has enough weight to stand against the busy piano without having to follow every rhythmic accent. The melody can stretch across the instrumental activity, giving the listener a longer thought to hold while the groove keeps moving. That difference is what makes the vocal version feel like a distinct song.
The versions that kept it circulating
Defected’s own archive identifies Danny Krivit’s re-edit as a defining version from the original period. The arrangement gave DJs another way to handle the relationship between the piano, the vocal and the rhythm, extending the recording’s life beyond the concise single format.
Michael Gray returned to the collaboration for Brown’s Legacy collection in 2024. That later release places the song within the singer’s wider body of work, where it belongs alongside her other house performances. The history of Strings of Life matters, but Brown’s contribution gives this particular recording another history of its own: a distinct voice turning a celebrated instrumental association into a personal declaration.
