Why we feature this artist
Morgan Geist, Damon C. Scott and a voice in an analogue room
Storm Queen began as a production project by Morgan Geist, giving a distinctive guest voice a carefully made house setting. Damon C. Scott's singing could sound vulnerable and forceful within the same phrase. Look Right Through supplied the first statement, before MK's later remix carried the song into a much larger pop audience.
The Environ recordings
Geist had already developed a substantial electronic-music identity, including his work with Darshan Jesrani as Metro Area. For Storm Queen, he returned to an analogue approach to house production with a clear disco inheritance. Environ released Look Right Through in October 2010, with Scott supplying the vocal after the two had met through his performances on the New York subway.
The original recording gives the singer a precise but unhurried setting. Bass, percussion and keyboard parts establish a physical groove without needing to fill every space, allowing the emotional pressure of the vocal to become the principal event. The song's appeal is in that fit: a performance that sounds exposed inside production whose detail remains carefully controlled.
The remix and the next songs
It Goes On followed in 2011 and Let's Make Mistakes in 2012, extending the collaboration beyond the first release. These recordings make the project easier to hear as a particular production idea, rather than as the artist credit attached to one major remix. The songs keep a strong relationship between the grain of the voice and the space inside the rhythm.
MK's treatment of Look Right Through reached number one in Britain in 2013, changing the scale and public setting of the material. The result is related to the original without being interchangeable with it. A remix can bring the vocal closer, reshape its repetitions or give the bass a different role; the underlying song is strong enough here for those changes to reveal another persuasive version of the same emotional scene.
