Why we feature this artist
A dance rhythm with something difficult to say
Stromae's songs frequently let the beat make the first promise, then use the words to complicate it. Paul Van Haver's delivery can be dry, rhythmic and theatrically precise, moving between a sung melody and a pointed spoken phrase. The records invite movement while keeping work, family, loneliness and public appearances firmly inside the song.
Cheese and the first breakthrough
The Brussels musician released Cheese in 2010 after Alors on danse had begun travelling internationally. The track's looping instrumental idea makes exhaustion feel physical, giving the vocal a setting that can be heard as either release or repetition without escape. The production is economical enough for the central musical figure to remain immediately identifiable.
His presentation also treated movement, clothing and video as parts of the same musical character. Those elements did not replace songwriting; they made the contradictions within it visible. A performer could appear immaculate while the words described strain, or a dance pattern could continue while the person at its centre seemed increasingly unable to participate in the expected way.
Racine carrée and Multitude
Racine carrée followed in 2013, with Papaoutai, Formidable and Tous les mêmes providing sharply different scenes. The songs moved between electronic rhythms and a broader range of musical references, while the vocal performances changed character to fit the subject. Formidable in particular gives apparent disarray a very carefully shaped musical form.
Multitude arrived in 2022, including Santé, L'enfer and Fils de joie. The arrangements widened further, drawing on instrumental colours and rhythms beyond the most familiar electronic-pop setting. The writing remained attentive to the gap between the role someone is expected to perform and the life inside it. Stromae's strongest songs make that gap audible before the listener has finished working through every line.
