Why we feature this artist
The hook at the centre of the drum-and-bass machinery
Sub Focus records often make a single sound feel like the reason the whole track exists. A bass figure, a bright lead phrase or a carefully placed vocal can become the organising idea, with the drums giving it scale and speed. Nick Douwma developed that instinct within drum and bass before making a broader kind of electronic album.
The RAM Records chapter
Douwma built his production skills independently before his music reached Andy C and RAM Records. Tracks such as X-Ray and Airplane established a clear dancefloor identity, with tightly defined sound design and an instinct for a dramatic change of pressure. The self-titled album arrived in 2009, including Rock It and Could This Be Real.
The album did not remain inside one narrow tempo or rhythmic format. Its different settings made the underlying production character easier to hear: clear melodic outlines, strong low frequencies and arrangements designed to make a particular musical event arrive with force. The music could be detailed without making the principal hook difficult to locate.
Torus and the later albums
Torus followed in 2013, with Tidal Wave featuring Alpines, Endorphins featuring Alex Clare and Turn Back Time among its central singles. The guest voices gave the production a more explicit emotional frame, while the album continued to move between drum and bass and other electronic settings. A recognisable singer could change the character without removing the producer's rhythmic signature.
The Wilkinson collaboration Portals in 2020 placed the emphasis on a sustained shared album atmosphere. Evolve in 2023 returned to another broad set of solo-billed recordings and collaborations. Across these projects, Sub Focus' strongest work keeps sound design connected to the shape of a song: the texture is memorable, but its arrival, repetition and eventual release are what make it matter in the track.
