Why we feature this artist

Robin Beck returns to First Time

Sunblock’s First Time brings Robin Beck back to the song that had made her voice internationally familiar. The 2006 version gives the melody a firm dance rhythm and a different sense of physical release. Beck’s participation matters: the record reconnects with the original singer’s performance identity while changing the musical setting around it.

The new vocal recording

Beck’s own biography records Universal’s invitation to sing First Time again with Sunblock. The new version therefore belongs to a specific return to the material. Her strong, grainy tone remains an immediate point of recognition, even as the production shifts the song toward the mid-2000s club-pop environment.

The chorus was already built for a large emotional gesture. Sunblock’s production changes how that gesture arrives, using the electronic rhythm and instrumental build to prepare it. The vocal can keep its familiar shape while the beat supplies a more regular dancefloor movement beneath it.

The 2006 single

The shared recording reached number nine in Britain through Manifesto in 2006. It followed Sunblock’s I’ll Be Ready, extending a production approach based on familiar melodic material. First Time adds a different kind of continuity because the featured singer herself returns to a song already closely associated with her.

The strongest aspect of the collaboration is the tension between recognition and renewal. Beck sounds connected to the earlier song, while the arrangement addresses another recording period and another listening setting. The melody’s emotional scale remains intact, but the new rhythmic structure gives it a different kind of momentum.
