Why we feature this artist

Teardrop: a temporary ensemble with a shared purpose

The Collective’s Teardrop belongs to the 2011 BBC Children in Need campaign. Organised around a one-off recording rather than a conventional band, the project brings singers and rappers into a new setting for Massive Attack’s song. The interest lies in the succession of voices: a familiar melodic idea becomes the meeting point for performers with very different ways of using language.

An ensemble assembled for the recording

The released single names Labrinth, Tulisa, Chipmunk, Dot Rotten, Ed Sheeran, Ms. Dynamite, Mz Bratt, Rizzle Kicks, Tinchy Stryder and Wretch 32. Contemporary campaign coverage also identifies Gary Barlow’s role in bringing the project together. The Collective name holds that particular recording effort together without erasing its individual participants.

The arrangement needs to accommodate more than a succession of sung leads. Rap passages create a denser verbal texture, while melodic phrases provide longer lines and a point of return. The changes of performer become part of the structure, giving the recording a group character through contrast rather than a single uniform vocal sound.

A charity single with several listening settings

The original release includes a radio edit, while the accompanying EP presents additional remix treatments. Those versions place the same group of credited voices within different rhythmic settings. The single was also part of the music programme surrounding the November 2011 Children in Need appeal.

Teardrop makes most sense as a document of that shared occasion. It is not the opening chapter of an invented permanent group, and its performers do not need identical solo careers for the collaboration to be meaningful. The recurring melody supplies continuity while the changing voices make the record sound like an assembly of people contributing to the same immediate purpose.
