Why we feature this artist
Big feelings, spoken plainly
The Script write about disappointment, endurance and the awkward work of carrying on. Their songs often begin close to speech, then move towards a chorus large enough for a room of people to share. The mixture of piano-led pop, guitar-band weight and rhythmic vocal phrasing gave their early records a clear personality.
The first stories
Danny O’Donoghue, Mark Sheehan and Glen Power formed the group in Dublin. Their self-titled debut appeared in 2008, with The Man Who Can’t Be Moved and Breakeven presenting two versions of a familiar situation: someone trying to explain a feeling that will not resolve on command. The writing uses concrete scenes and conversational turns before the chorus makes the emotion more expansive. The arrangements follow that movement, keeping the voice close before giving it the support of the full band.
Science & Faith arrived in 2010. For the First Time places private difficulty against a wider sense of pressure, while Nothing makes an uneasy late-night story into a direct pop song. The records work best when the specific situation remains audible inside the larger hook.
The lift has to come from somewhere
The next albums broadened the scale and the range of collaborators, with Hall of Fame becoming an especially visible example of the group’s motivational side. No Sound Without Silence in 2014 returned attention to the band’s own instrumental character through songs including Superheroes. The uplifting moments can dominate a quick account of the catalogue, but the quieter frustration beneath them is part of what makes the lift effective. These songs are often about people struggling to get from one state of mind to another. Hearing several records together makes that pattern clearer without making the characters interchangeable. The Script bring a grounded, story-driven strand of pop-rock into the transition from the late 2000s to the next decade.
Essential releases
The Script
The Man Who Can’t Be Moved and Breakeven introduce the band’s clear narrative voice, with piano, guitar and vocal phrasing working closely together.
Science & Faith
For the First Time and Nothing give the second album its emotional range. Listen for the small details in the verses before the choruses widen the view.
No Sound Without Silence
A later point of entry with Superheroes among its most immediate songs. The arrangements foreground the group’s band sound while retaining the direct melodic approach.
