Why we feature this artist
Nile Rodgers’ guitar inside Sensitivity
Sensitivity brings the Shapeshifters’ house production into direct contact with Nile Rodgers’ guitar playing. The CHIC credit is supported by a specific instrumental contribution, while Kelly-Marie Smith supplies the lead vocal. The recording’s warmth comes from how those performances fit within Simon Marlin and Max Reich’s carefully organised rhythmic setting.
The Sound Advice collaboration
The single appeared in 2006 as part of the Shapeshifters’ debut-album period, Sound Advice. The original artist-owned notes identify Rodgers on guitar, Nick Fyffe on bass, Ben Gant in the brass and the London Session Orchestra on strings. Jenna Gibbons provides backing vocals, giving the arrangement several distinct human layers.
Marlin and Reich produced and mixed the recording. Their house framework keeps the motion firm while allowing Rodgers’ clipped guitar figures to add another kind of rhythmic movement. Smith’s lead can then carry a broader melodic phrase above those interlocking instrumental details.
The mixes around the performance
The original release includes an extended version, a Nocturnal mix and treatments by Martijn Ten Velden and Pete Heller. The package gives the same collaboration several balances between song and instrumental development, with the vocal and guitar providing continuity across the changes.
Sensitivity is especially interesting because the disco connection is present in the playing, not only in a production reference. Rodgers’ guitar contributes active detail to the groove, while the bass, brass and strings give the record a full band-like texture. The house rhythm holds those parts together without making their individual gestures disappear.
