The story of The Sheer

Why we feature this artist

Bright Dutch guitar-pop with a busy organ in the corner

The Sheer's early records made enthusiasm feel like an arranging choice. The Haarlem band could put a direct vocal melody over bright guitar, a firm rhythm and keyboard parts that kept finding small ways to answer the song. The Keyword Is Excitement was a useful title for a debut whose energy came from the interaction between those elements.

The first album

Something to Say introduced the group in 2003, before The Keyword Is Excitement arrived in 2004. The sound drew on a broad British guitar-pop inheritance without making every song behave the same way. Organ and harmony parts gave the arrangements a particular colour, while the band kept the main melodic idea clear enough to remain the centre of attention.

It Only Gets Better and other early recordings revealed an instinct for a hook that could sound uncomplicated without leaving the performance empty. The keyboard did not simply fill the gaps between guitar parts; it could give a section a second rhythmic or melodic direction. Those smaller details made the band's bright surface feel animated rather than merely polished.

Feel the Need and the later sound

Feel the Need followed in 2006, including Understand and The Girl That Lost Her Mind, Part 1. The second album gave the group a fuller recording setting while preserving the directness of the early songs. The playing could become more emphatic without making the melody difficult to locate inside it.

Here and Now and Long Before appeared in 2009, with Tell Me, Home and The Devil on His Own among its songs. The title suggests a wider reflective frame than the first album's declaration of excitement, and the sequence gives the band room to move beyond one kind of immediate pop rush. The early records are most rewarding when the instrumental responses are heard as part of the writing, with guitar, keyboard and vocal all helping decide how a chorus arrives.
