Why we feature this artist
U96: a film theme at the entrance to a wider electronic world
U96’s Das Boot makes a cinematic melody behave like a dance record. The familiar theme becomes a sharply outlined electronic signal, moving through a setting of insistent rhythm and dramatic effects. The early-1990s breakthrough is an immediate introduction, but the project’s later recordings show a broader interest in how electronic music can create a place as well as a pulse.
A Hamburg studio partnership
In a first-hand account of U96’s beginnings, Hayo Lewerentz described meeting Alex Christensen through Hamburg’s club scene in 1991, then working with him alongside Ingo Hauss and Helmut Hoinkis. The project joined a DJ’s perspective to an established production and musicianship setting.
Das Boot reworked Klaus Doldinger’s film music, preserving the theme’s recognisable outline while changing its physical impact. The electronic arrangement makes short returns and emphatic entrances feel central. What had served a cinematic world could now organise movement in a club.
The project keeps changing its scale
The original run extended into records such as Love Sees No Colour, Club Bizarre and Heaven. After the early production team went in different directions, Hauss and Lewerentz later developed another U96 chapter, including the 2018 Reboot album and work with former Kraftwerk member Wolfgang Flür.
The 2022 album 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea brought the nautical imagery into a wider audiovisual setting, with actor Claude-Oliver Rudolph involved in the anniversary project. That return to atmosphere is a useful way into the catalogue. Even when the rhythm is forceful, U96 often gives the sounds a surrounding scene: mechanical movement, darkness, depth or the feeling of a journey continuing beyond the next refrain.
