The story of Vance Joy

Why we feature this artist

A small stringed instrument, then a much wider songbook

Riptide gave Vance Joy an instantly familiar entrance, with an insistent ukulele figure and a vocal that seemed to lean naturally into the melody. The Australian songwriter's later albums made that one sound a beginning rather than a complete identity. Acoustic detail remained important, while band arrangements gave the songs more room to change scale.

The first album

James Keogh released music as Vance Joy, with Riptide appearing before Dream Your Life Away in 2014. The debut placed the breakthrough beside Mess Is Mine and Georgia, whose different arrangements made the melodic range clearer. A repeated acoustic figure could provide the first hook, but the songs also depended on how the voice moved from a restrained verse toward a more open chorus.

Georgia allowed a slower emotional development, while Mess Is Mine had a firmer rhythmic invitation. Those differences helped the album remain a set of songs rather than one repeated acoustic-pop effect. The singing was direct enough to make a scene easy to follow, with small hesitations and changes of pressure keeping the polished recording close to a recognisable person.

Nation of Two and In Our Own Sweet Time

Nation of Two followed in 2018, including Lay It on Me, Saturday Sun and We're Going Home. The record gave relationships and the idea of shared space a more sustained album setting, with the instrumental parts able to build beyond the modest scale of the early performances. The voice remained the principal point of continuity.

In Our Own Sweet Time arrived in 2022, with Missing Piece and Clarity providing clear entrances. By that stage, the catalogue had accumulated enough different rhythmic and production settings to make the writing itself the more useful definition. Vance Joy's strongest songs give an everyday emotional situation a melody that feels easy to recognise, then let the arrangement reveal how much movement and uncertainty can fit inside that apparent ease.
