Heartbreaker: an album song acquires a new voice

Heartbreaker already existed on will.i.am’s Songs About Girls before the 2008 featured version with Cheryl Cole. The later recording gives the song another vocal colour without losing its lightly stepping rhythm. Its uneasy romantic subject is carried by an arrangement that sounds much more relaxed than the situation it describes.

The international remix is a particular recording

Universal explicitly identifies the Cheryl version as an international remix release from April 2008. The original Songs About Girls track belongs to 2007, so the featured single is a later development of the song rather than the point at which the composition first appeared.

Will.i.am’s production keeps the instrumental movement compact. Piano and Josh Lopez’s guitar appear in the credits, while the vocal arrangement also includes Cee-Lo and Simon Battle in background roles. Those additional textures give the refrain support without making every voice occupy the same foreground position.

Cheryl changes the character of the exchange

The official video preserves the featured billing and makes the collaboration visually explicit. Cheryl’s lighter tone sits against will.i.am’s more rhythmically direct delivery, allowing a familiar phrase to sound different when it changes singer.

The production’s restraint is useful here. The beat does not need a dramatic transformation to announce the guest; a change of voice is enough. Heartbreaker gains its particular charm from that proportion, keeping the melody easy to follow while the performance suggests a more awkward conversation beneath the surface.
