About Metallica
Metallica turned the speed and aggression of underground thrash into a language large enough for arenas without losing its appetite for risk. Across more than four decades, the band has repeatedly changed scale, production and ambition while keeping the same central engine: precise riffs, physical rhythm and songs built to survive the stage.
From tape-trading underground to global metal institution
Metallica's story is a long arc from the early-1980s Los Angeles and Bay Area metal scenes to a band capable of carrying intricate thrash, stadium-scale hooks and ambitious live productions around the world.
Metallica began on October 28, 1981, when drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist and singer James Hetfield connected through an advertisement in the Los Angeles Recycler. Ron McGovney and Dave Mustaine soon joined the early lineup, and the group recorded the No Life 'Til Leather demo before relocating toward the Bay Area scene and recruiting bassist Cliff Burton.
The debut album, Kill 'Em All, arrived in 1983 and helped define the faster, more aggressive style that became known as thrash metal. Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets expanded that foundation with longer forms, dynamic contrasts and more ambitious songwriting, while ...And Justice for All pushed the band's technical and structural instincts even further.
Cliff Burton's death in a 1986 tour-bus accident was a defining rupture. Jason Newsted subsequently joined the band, and Metallica continued through the late 1980s into the era of its self-titled 1991 album. The record, widely nicknamed the Black Album but officially titled Metallica, shifted toward a broader, heavier and more economical sound and became the band's defining mainstream breakthrough.
The 1990s brought another transformation. Load and ReLoad moved beyond the band's classic thrash template, while Garage Inc. revisited influences through covers and S&M placed the band's catalogue against a symphonic setting. The early 2000s were more turbulent, culminating in St. Anger and the documentary Some Kind of Monster. Robert Trujillo joined as the band's bassist in 2003.
Death Magnetic in 2008 marked a return toward the band's earlier riff-driven intensity, followed by the live film Metallica Through the Never, Hardwired...To Self-Destruct and, in 2023, 72 Seasons. The latter became the band's twelfth studio album, recorded at HQ in San Rafael and produced by Greg Fidelman with Hetfield and Ulrich.
Metallica's influence now extends beyond records: the band has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, built its own Blackened Recordings operation, and established the All Within My Hands Foundation to support communities, food banks and music education. In 2026, the group remains active on the M72 World Tour with Hetfield, Ulrich, Hammett and Trujillo.
