Why we feature this artist

The unhurried songs behind Save Tonight

Save Tonight is one of those records whose acoustic guitar seems to announce the whole song before the singing starts. Eagle-Eye Cherry delivered it with an easy, slightly grainy voice, turning a farewell into something people could sing together. His albums give that familiar performance a quieter and more varied setting.

A return to Stockholm

Born in Stockholm into the family of musician Don Cherry and artist Moki Cherry, Eagle-Eye spent part of his youth in New York and worked as an actor before concentrating on songs. Returning to Sweden in the middle of the nineties gave him the setting for Desireless. The album appeared there in 1997 before its music travelled much more widely.

Save Tonight places a sombre premise inside a warm, circular arrangement. Falling in Love Again has a different emotional weight, stretching the debut's sound beyond the lead single's immediate lift. Cherry's delivery is conversational enough to make both feel connected. The music borrows from rock, soul and acoustic songwriting without making a spectacle of the borders between them.

Following the first album

Living in the Present Future arrived in 2000. Are You Still Having Fun? sharpened the rhythmic side of his writing, while Long Way Around brought a vocal contribution from his sister Neneh Cherry. That duet is a useful reminder that his music emerged from a particularly broad musical family, even when the arrangements themselves sounded direct and modest.

Sub Rosa followed in 2003, continuing a run of recording and extensive touring before a longer pause. The early catalogue has a consistent sense of economy: guitar figures are memorable, the singing leaves room for the lyric, and the band rarely crowds a song simply to enlarge it. Save Tonight remains the unavoidable doorway, but the less celebratory moments around it explain the appeal just as clearly.
