Why we feature this artist

A personal songwriting project finds a wider band sound

Novastar is the musical project centred on Joost Zweegers, whose piano, guitar and singing give the records a recognisable emotional perspective. The Dutch-born songwriter’s work developed in Belgium, with a band setting allowing intimate melodic ideas to open into a larger sound. The early catalogue makes that relationship between an individual voice and a shared arrangement particularly clear.

The first album gives the songs a home

The self-titled debut arrived in 2000, including Wrong and The Best Is Yet to Come. The songs have a clear melodic outline, with the vocal often holding a little uncertainty inside an otherwise accessible refrain. The production gives that quality enough room to remain audible instead of replacing it with a uniformly polished surface.

Another Lonely Soul in 2004 developed through work with Piet Goddaer, known for Ozark Henry. Never Back Down and When the Lights Go Down on the Broken Hearted provide useful introductions to the chapter. The collaboration gives the writing another instrumental and production perspective while leaving Zweegers’s own character at the centre.

Almost Bangor lets the mood become more inward

Almost Bangor in 2008 adds a more restrained emotional setting, with Because offering an immediate point of entry. The change gives the early sequence a useful contrast: the melodic generosity remains, while the surrounding music allows a more inward kind of pressure. Later records, including Inside Outside in 2014 and In the Cold Light of Monday in 2018, extend the project through further recording choices. Novastar’s identity is best heard as a continuing songwriting perspective rather than one fixed lineup or a single successful refrain. The band and studio collaborators make different aspects of the songs possible, while the narrator’s slightly unsettled presence keeps them connected. A clear chorus can still contain a thought that has not entirely found its answer, giving the familiar melodic shape a reason to stay with the listener.
