The story of Phil Collins

Why we feature this artist

The drummer is still inside the pop song

In the Air Tonight makes its most famous entrance unusually late. Phil Collins lets the voice and electronic atmosphere establish the tension before the drums change the scale, turning an arrangement decision into the emotional centre of the recording.

Face Value contains more than that one dramatic arrival

Face Value in 1981 opened a solo chapter alongside Collins’s continuing work in Genesis. I Missed Again places a more buoyant, R&B-informed arrangement next to the exposed feeling of If Leaving Me Is Easy. The album’s contrasts matter: a musician already known as a drummer and band singer was finding several different ways to frame a personal lead voice.

Hello, I Must Be Going! followed in 1982. I Don’t Care Anymore carries a much harder emotional edge, while the cover of You Can’t Hurry Love draws on a different kind of rhythmic and melodic familiarity. The singing remains recognisable across those changes, with a directness that can make a large pop arrangement feel like an immediate statement.

No Jacket Required brings the rhythm further forward

The 1985 album puts Sussudio, One More Night, Don’t Lose My Number and Take Me Home into the same sequence. The electronic and acoustic rhythmic elements are central to its character, but the songs do not all ask for the same performance. One More Night gives a sustained melodic line more space; Sussudio makes repetition and instrumental punctuation part of the hook. The record’s scale helped define a period of mainstream pop, yet the useful detail is often smaller than the reputation. Collins understands how an entrance changes a song: a drum fill, a brass response or a backing voice can make the next line arrive with a different weight. The familiar choruses are built from those decisions, which connect the solo singer to the drummer still organising the room around him.
