Thrust: an independent record with a long memory

Thrust’s Do You Understand? belongs to a Canadian hip-hop history built through local radio, studio friendships and records made on an independent scale. The SCAM remix gives the Toronto rapper a particularly fluid setting, its unhurried rhythm leaving room for a delivery that keeps shifting its internal emphasis. The voice supplies the movement without needing the instrumental to become crowded.

Past, Present, Future

The mid-1990s Past, Present, Future EP puts that recording beside material with a more personal historical purpose. Its final B-Poet passage preserves a Fantastic Voyage radio appearance from 1988. In a 2018 interview, Thrust explained that including it allowed listeners to hear the voice of Rage, whom he remembered elsewhere on the record.

The title also reflected his interest in spirituality and the relationship between different moments of a life. That idea gives the EP a wider frame than a collection of disconnected performances: older voices, immediate studio work and the prospect of continuing as an artist all sit within the same record.

Learning the record business by making the record

Thrust described financing the release himself through Frankenstein’s Knowledge of Self label. The two already knew one another and studied at the same music institute, with Frankenstein working on production while Thrust pursued the business side. The arrangement gave him a practical way to learn how his own music could reach listeners.

That attention to the finished record extended to its sound. His account of travelling to New York for mastering makes the EP feel like a deliberate independent undertaking, not an accidental demo that escaped the studio. Later digital editions brought the material back into circulation, including a separately issued SCAM remix in 2021. The relaxed surface of Do You Understand? carries a considerable amount of work behind it.
